BA Programs

Ⅰ. Applicants

Eligible applicants must be a non-Chinese speaking foreigner or an overseas Chinese with a legitimate high school diploma or above. Those who have passedHSK-6or equivalent tests may directly enroll in the Chinese Language and Literature program or TCSOL program in the School of Liberal Arts. Those whose Chinese is below HSK-6 should take an intensive one-year Chinese program in the Language and Culture Center; and after that, those who satisfy the Chinese requirements can be transferred to their corresponding academic programs and those who fail must continue their Chinese study.

II. Programs

(I) Chinese Language and Literature (CLL)

A. Teaching Objectives

It aims to cultivate an all-purpose linguistic and cultural talent with a high level of Chinese language and Chinese culture, who has a global vision and is acquainted with China’s national conditions and able to apply Chinese to intercultural communication and general academic researches. Graduates are expected to work at government agencies, companies, media or cultural and educational institutions in their respective native countries. They will take on jobs related to Chinese language, literature and cultural communication, such as teachers, secretaries, translators, journalists and civil officials. Moreover, they are expected to take on jobs related to journalism, business or enterprise management in China. Upon completion of this program, they may further their studies in other fields for higher diplomas or degrees in China’s colleges and universities.

B. Requirements

1. A good accomplishment in humanities and social sciences, a strong sense of social responsibility, a high level of professional ethics, and a broad international vision;

2. A good command of the professional knowledge of reading, writing, listening and speaking, literature and others related to work in the field of Chinese language, literature and culturalcommunication;

3. The ability of applying the basic theory and professional knowledge of Chinese language and literature to the solution of problems and the experience of learning a systematic knowledge of language and literature;

4. A strong ability of modern information technology, a high level of proficiency in OA skills, and a command of the basic skills to obtain information via document retrieval, data query and the application of modern information technology;

5. The cultivation of basic qualities and the practical training of basic abilities, the awareness of lifelong learning and the ability to continue to practice;

6. The attitude and awareness of the pursuit of innovation, a better organization and management skills, teamwork ability and trans-cultural communicative and learning abilities;

7. The completion of a graduation paper in more than 5,000 Chinese characters and the thesis defense.

C. Courses

1. Basic courses: Integrated Chinese (Elementary), Integrated Chinese (Intermediate), Integrated Chinese (Advanced), Chinese Listening and Speaking, Chinese Reading and Writing, etc.

2. Core courses: Modern Chinese, Ancient Chinese, Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern Chinese Literature, Contemporary Chinese Literature, Foreign Literature, Introduction to Literature, Fundamental Chinese Writing, Introduction to Secretarial Studies, etc.

(II) Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL)

A. Teaching Objectives

The program aims to cultivate senior interdisciplinary talents with broad international vision and strong intercultural communicative skills, a high level of Chinese language and Chinese culture, and a good command of the theory, practical skills and modern information and education technology for Chinese teaching, who are capable of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages and the communication of Chinese language and culture.

B. Requirements

1. A good professional quality, professional development and professional ethics;

2. A good command of the basic knowledge and theories of Chinese culture, methods of teaching Chinese as a foreign language that involve learning such courses as “Chinese Teaching Methodology”, “Testing and Evaluation”, “Courses, Curriculum, Textbooks and Supplementary Teaching Materials”, and “Modern Educational Technology and Application”, the theories and methodology of teaching Chinese as a second language, the laws governing the learning of Chinese as a second language and the characteristics of its learners, the ability to help learners to successfully learn Chinese, the capacity of organizing and implementing teaching activities, and the practical experience and skills in teaching Chinese as a foreign language;

3. Better cultural and communicative skills comprised of the two modules of “Chinese Culture and a Comparative Study on Chinese and Foreign Cultures” and “Intercultural Communication”, involving the multicultural awareness, the similarities and differences between the Chinese and the world cultural knowledge, and an international perspective and cross-cultural thinking , communicative , cooperative and learning capabilities;

4. Solid basic knowledge of the humanities and the natural sciences, and a good command of some traditional Chinese crafts and talents;

5. The tempering of basic qualities and the practical training in basic capabilities for a teacher, the awareness of lifelong learning and the ability to continue to practice;

6. A command of the basic skills to obtain information via document retrieval, data query and the application of modern information technology;

7. A command of the basic computer skills and multimedia courseware production skills, and proficiency in applying these skills to the teaching of Chinese culture and the cultural communicationand exchange in Chinese;

8. The completion of a graduation paper in more than 5,000 Chinese characters and the thesis defense.

C. Courses

1. Basic courses: Integrated Chinese (Elementary), Integrated Chinese (Intermediate), Integrated Chinese (Advanced), Chinese Listening and Speaking, Chinese Reading and Writing, etc.

2. Core courses: Modern Chinese, Ancient Chinese, Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to TCSOL, Methodology of Language Teaching, Introduction to Second Language Acquisition, Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern Chinese Literature, Contemporary Chinese Literature, Introduction to Chinese Culture, etc.

III. Minimum Credits for Graduation

175 credits, including 165 curricular credits and 10 extracurricular credits.

Notes: The required credits for international students are: 50-60 credits. They may opt for courses of other majors if they are interested and the credits will be counted in the total credits as well. For all compulsory and elective courses, the rule of “courses exempt from studying must not be exempted from examination” applies.

IV. Duration and Degree

The regular duration is 4 years, but a flexible duration of 3-8 years is available. A student may graduate and earn his/her BA degree when all the requirements herein are satisfied.
