A Cross-Cultural Youth Dialogue: Intellectual Property Protection and the Inheritance of Dragon Boat Festival Intangible Cultural Heritage

On April 24, the event themed "Inheritance of China’s Dragon Boat Festival Intangible Cultural Heritage and Intellectual Property Protection", jointly participated by Chinese and international students, was successfully held at Jiangsu University. As one of the flagship events for World Intellectual Property Day at Jiangsu University, this activity was co-hosted by the University’s Language and Culture Center and School of Intellectual Property. It aimed to explore the creative transformation and innovative development of the traditional knowledge embedded in the Dragon Boat Festival’s intangible cultural heritage, strengthen international students’ cultural identity with Chinese civilization, and raise awareness among both Chinese and international students about intellectual property protection.

At the outset of the event, teachers from the Language and Culture Center gave a detailed introduction to the rich cultural connotations and diverse folk customs of China’s Dragon Boat Festival. From making zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings) and sachets to dragon boat racing, the students learned about the profound cultural value and unique craftsmanship inheritance embodied in these traditions, as well as the numerous challenges they face in modern society. The traditional knowledge of intangible cultural heritage is not only a memory of history; it also needs to be integrated into modern life through innovation. The intellectual property system serves as a crucial safeguard for this goal, encouraging young students to participate in the innovative development of intangible cultural heritage.

In the closing session, teachers from the Language and Culture Center and School of Intellectual Property guided Chinese and international students to make interesting Dragon Boat Festival sachets and mugwort health hammers by hand. During this hands-on experience, the students not only personally felt the charm of Dragon Boat Festival culture but also deepened their understanding of promoting the creative transformation and innovative development of fine traditional Chinese culture. They gained a profound insight that intellectual property protection can inject new vitality into these time-honored cultural traditions that embody the wisdom and dedication of generations.
